It was certainly a day to remember and to forget for teams and drivers alike, but for none more so than Matt (Neal) and “Flash” (Shedden) and Team Dynamics. Matt Neal and his Honda Civic was ordered off of the grid at the restart of Race 3 of the day and Gordon Shedden was excluded after the race due to a technical infringement.
A rain shower of almost biblical proportions fell during the race before the Touring Cars and continued for the start of the third race for the BTCC clan. With Dave Newsham and BTC Norlin Racing on Pole Position thanks to the reversed grid, it was bound to be fireworks.
The Lights went out and Newsham made a decent start but not as good as Neal on the outside… Neal, took the lead into the first corner but couldn’t use full throttle as the car was aquaplaning when he did. Unfortunately Matt hit a river running across the track which spat him off into the gravel. The race was red flagged and the cars were ordered to form up in their original starting positions. However, as Neal received mechanical help to be removed from the gravel, he was no longer allowed to start from the front row… In fact he wasn’t allowed to start at all… Neal was pushed off the grid and into the garage.
So onto the restart and Dave Newsham made a better start from the front row and Colin Turkington had a clear run to Redgate corner due to the removal of Neal’s Civic from position two on the grid… Newsham pulled away nicely over the first few laps but then Shedden made his way passed Colin in the BMW and took half a lap before he was on Newsham’s boot lid. Gordon wasted no time is dispatching The Chevrolet Cruze and set about building a gap as the rain and track conditions improved. Then it was the turn of Turkington to nip passed the Cruze on lap 8 at the final chicane.
By the races nearing conclusion, it was a three horse race for the final podium place, Ash Sutton made his way by an ever trying Newsham who had been caught by Adam Morgan in his MAC Tools Racing Mercedes A Class. Newsham surprised everyone including Sutton, in what was a do or die maneuver on the penultimate lap and made it stick. However, it wasn’t to be as Morgan and Sutton muscled the Scot out of the way and took BTC Norlin Racings first podium away from them. Morgan finished 3rd, Sutton 5th and Newsham in 6th position.
The drama wasn’t ending there though, Shedden made his way in to parc ferme and failed the ride height test… After appeals and investigations, the Organizers threw Shedden and Team Dynamics out of the race three results so Turkington inherited the win from Morgan in 2nd and Sutton 3rd. Dave Newsham gained 4th place. Still a monumental effort from the grey and pink army…
